FAQs

Lake Wylie Genetics – Personalized Support for Your Genetic Health

1. What is genetic counseling?

Genetic counseling is a healthcare service that helps individuals and families understand how genetic conditions may affect them. A genetic counselor will review your medical and family history, explain available testing options, and support you in making informed decisions based on your values, needs, and goals.

2. Who should consider genetic counseling?

You may benefit from genetic counseling if you:

  • Have a personal or family history of cancer (especially diagnosed under age 50)

  • Have multiple relatives with the same or related cancers

  • Have a known hereditary condition in the family

  • Are planning for a pregnancy and want to learn about risks to your child

  • Have had abnormal genetic test results or are considering genetic testing

3. What happens during a genetic counseling appointment?

Appointments typically include:

  • A review of your personal and family medical history, including detailed risk analysis for genetic conditions

  • Education about genetic conditions and inheritance patterns

  • A discussion of whether genetic testing is appropriate

  • Coordination of genetic testing if elected by the patient

  • Help interpreting test results and planning next steps
Appointments are usually 45–60 minutes and can be done in-person or via telehealth.

4. Do I have to get genetic testing if I meet with a genetic counselor?

Not at all. Genetic testing is optional. Your counselor will provide information and help you weigh the pros and cons, but the decision is always yours.

5. How much does it cost? Will insurance cover this?

Lake Wylie Genetics does not bill insurance directly, but we can provide a superbill that you may submit for possible reimbursement.
Genetic testing, when ordered, is often covered by insurance. Your counselor will help you understand potential costs before any testing is initiated.

6. Will my genetic information be kept private?

Yes. We follow all HIPAA and federal privacy guidelines. Your information is confidential and will only be shared with your permission, or as required by law.

7. Can I bring a family member to my appointment?

Absolutely. Many people find it helpful to bring a partner, sibling, or parent—especially when discussing shared family history.

8. What types of genetic testing are offered?

We coordinate testing through qualified laboratories and may offer testing related to:

  • Hereditary cancer (e.g., BRCA1/2, Lynch syndrome)

  • Carrier screening (for family planning)

  • Other conditions on case-by-case basis

Your counselor will help determine which testing, if any, is appropriate for your needs.

9. How do I prepare for my appointment?

Before your visit:

  • Gather as much family health history as you can (especially cancer diagnoses and ages)

  • Write down any questions or concerns

  • If possible, bring copies of previous genetic test results
